Letter written on November 22, 1942, by Heinrich Dawicki, age 36, to his sister and parents in Lodz, Poland from Dachau

Dear Lola! I’m very worried that you left home. I am healthy and feel good, which I also wish for you with my whole heart. Dear Lola, keep your chin up, it has to end at some point, hopefully it won’t last for much longer. Now you will also know what it means to be away from home? Now you will also believe what longing I have for you and for my family. I kiss you a thousand times over. Your lover who loves you. PS: Special greetings to your mama, brother, and sister. Keep hope alive, fare well. Dear parents! I received with gratitude your letter from November 8th. The money, 50 Reichsmarks, and the package with fruit I also received. My sincere thanks for all of this. Dear parents, I am happy, which I also hope of you. I’m curious how our father looks, whether he is still employed at his old position. Dearest Janku, and you, too, dearest Marytin and little Terenin, what’s new with you, are you healthy? Janku, where are your brothers and your sister at, how are they doing. Dear parents, what’s new with Aunt Kazia and how is she doing? How is Uncle Walek, Aunt Hela Wala, Eugenia and you, dear Josef? Are you all healthy? What do you hear in Piotrków with Janúsz and Genia? What’s up with Josia and Lolek, are they in good health? Dear parents! I have a request for you. I would need a little money and a package if it’s possible. Dear parents, in closing I kiss you a thousand times over, also sister Maria, Janka and the little one. Greetings to all the relations and acquaintances. Your son, Dear Parents! I am happy to report that I am in good health, and I wish the same for all of you. I was delighted to receive your package and thank you for it. I hugely appreciated the money transfer. I didn't receive the letter until today; I'm not sure why the letters arrived so late. Please take note of the new postal package instruction on the fourth page of the letter. Warm greetings and kisses to everyone at home, as well as my brother-in-law, sister, and little Terenia. Liebe Lola! Ich mache mir große Sorgen, dass du von zu Hause weggegangen bist. Ich bin gesund und fühle mich wohl, was ich Ihnen auch von ganzem Herzen wünsche. Liebe Lola, Kopf hoch, irgendwann muss es vorbei sein, hoffentlich dauert es nicht mehr lange. Jetzt wissen Sie auch, was es bedeutet, von zu Hause weg zu sein? Jetzt wirst du auch glauben, welche Sehnsucht ich nach dir und nach meiner Familie habe. Ich küsse dich tausendmal.
