Letter written on January 3, 1943, postmarked on the 9th, by Roman Warst to his wife Wladyslawa in Warthegau, Poland from Sachsenhausen

Dear Mom, Dad, Son, and Siblings! I can honestly say that I have received the cards, cash, and food parcels on December 23rd, which you, mother, and Marie, sent to me in the best of health. Marie should remember to include the date on the note when sending parcels so I can let her know which ones I have and have not received. You claim, my dear mother, that someone advised against sending too much bread; this is untrue. Send as much as you'd like. I am very sorry that you must work in your advanced age and with this illness, dear mother; I am sorry, that I am unable to help you and that I'm just making things harder for you. I feel like a burden. Best wishes for a happy and healthy new year to all our friends and family, especially to you, my dear mother, Marie, and my little boy.

Liebe Mutter, Frau, Söhnchen und Geschwister! Für die Karten, Geld und Lebensmittelpäckchen vom 23.12.1942 von dir liebe Mutter und von Marie habe ich bei bester Gesundheit erhalten, wofür ich herzlich danke. Wenn Marie Päckchen schickt, soll sie nicht vergessen auf dem Zettel das Datum aufschreiben, damit ich ihr eine Antwort geben kann, von welchem ich es bekommen habe. Du schreibst, liebe Mutter, dass dir jemand gesagt hat, man darf nicht zu viel Brot schicken, das ist nicht wahr. Kannst du so viel schicken? Es tut mir sehr Leid für Dich liebe Mutter, dass Du auf alte Jahre und mit dieser Krankheit  arbeiten musst und ich kann Dir nicht helfen, bin nur eine Last für dich.
