Letter written on March 19, 1944, by Jakob Smol, age 37, to his friend Aleksander in Posen, Poland from Sachsenhausen

My dearest friends! I'm in good health, and I sincerely hope you are too. Please, inform Franiu that I received both parcels in February and a letter from her on March 18th. On February 15th, I received one from you as well, thank you. I am happy that Irek and Halinka are growing up nicely and that they are diligent students. I really want to see them, Halinka and Irek, that is. What about our parents? As the years go by and they get older, I really wish I could see them once more. May God grant them good health till we meet again. The same is true of my Franiu; when she is alone, she seems pitiful. Although things are difficult for you and Pela right now, thank God, you have each other. Kisses from the heart to you, Pela, and the kids, and to dear mom and dad. Best Wishes to Janu and Hieck.

Meine Allerliebsten! Ich bin gesund und wünsche Euch allen von Herzen.  Teilt Franiu mit dem ich am 18ten. Brief von Ihnen erhalten habe, auch 2 Pakete vom Februar erhalten, von Ihnen am 15.II besten Dank. Es freut mich, dass die Kinder Irek u. Halinka gut aussehen u. lernen möchte sie so gerne sehen, Halinka so wie Irek. Wie gehts Mutter u. Vater, wenn ich sie nur noch mahl sehen könnte, die Jahre vergehen, sie werden alt, geben Gott ihnen lange Gesundheit bis wir uns wiedersehen werden. So ist es auch mit meiner Franiu so alleine, das ist furchtbar, wie sieht sie aus. Auch Pela u. Du hast jetzt schwer aber danket Gott, dass Ihr beisammen seid. Liebe Mamma, Vater, dich, Pela u.
