Letter written on February 20, 1944, by Jakob Smol, age 37, to his wife, Franziska in Szamotuły, Poland from Sachsenhausen

My dearest Sznupus! I am healthy, and I sincerely hope that you are all as well. I am really grateful to Aleks for his letter, the 15 Reichsmarks, and parcel that I received from him on February 13 and 10. I just received the 15 Reichsmarks that you sent. Please don't send me any more money, Sweetie, I don't need it.  Aleks' mother must have informed you what his mother looks like; please let me know how they are doing. I'm even more interested to find out how you look, how you're doing, and what you're going through. I also wonder if you're living comfortably. However, comfort yourself with the knowledge that I think of you while I'm far from you, with sincere love and longing. There are a lot of unhappy people, but God won't abandon us, unlike some of our peers, who keep getting drunk. I want to express my deepest gratitude and greetings to Antos, Dear Stasia, and the fine individuals who are currently helping you and me. Mein allerliebster Sznupus! Ich bin gesund und wünsche dir allen Nächsten von Herzen.  Von Aleks habe ich am 13.II Brief erhalten u15-RM am 10ten ein Päckchen, danke Ihm sehr dafür.  Von dir 15-Rm heute erhalten. Kochanie* bitte sendet mir Kein Geld mehr, ich brauche es nicht. Schreibe mir wie es den Eltern bei Aleks geht, Mutter hat dir wohl erzählt wie sieht Mutter aus. Bin noch mehr neugierig wie du aussiehst, wie gehts dir, ich stelle mir vor wenn du anständig leben willst, was du durchmachen musst, aber tröste dich damit das weit von dir Ich mit inniger Liebe und Sehnsucht an dich denke, es sind ja soviel Menschen unglücklich aber Gott wird auch uns nicht verlassen, wie so mancher Kollege, aber die sind am meisten beim Glas.
