Letter written July 9, 1944, by Jakob Smol, age 37, to his wife Franziska in Szamotuły, Poland, from Sachsenhausen

My dearest Sznupus! I'm healthy, and I sincerely wish the same for you and all our friends. I received the letter and package from you on June 20th, and I appreciate it. Please relay my thanks to Aleks for the letter dated July 30th and the package dated July 5th. And give my best wishes to our parents in honor of Father's Day. Do not be upset because I wrote Aleks the last letter. Sweetie, it is good that you take care of everything, even my clothes and belongings, but since sending me a package causes you a lot of trouble, kindly refrain from doing so. I will be fine without these things. Aleks should provide for the kids as well; it is not feasible to help me when you are going through such difficult times. Write to me frequently to let me know how you're doing. Your uncles send me a lot of greetings and lots of packages. Please greet Martin, Antos and family, Stefeiu and his wife. Sending you kisses. 

Allerliebster Sznupus! Ich bin gesund, wünsche dir allen Nächsten von Herzen. Brief u. Paket habe ich von Dir am 20.VI mit Dank erhalten. Von Aleks Brief am 30ten u. Paket am 5.7. bedanke ihn u. Eltern zu Vaters Namenstag, sende Herzl. Glückwünsche von mir. Sei nicht böse den letzten Brief habe ich zu Aleks geschrieben. Kochanie es ist schön das du dich um alles so kümmerst wegen der Wäsche u. meine Sachen, da dir es viel Schwierigkeiten macht mir ein Paket zu schicken so bitte dich sende mir nichts, es wird schon ohne das gehen, auch Aleks soll den Kindern geben, es geht nicht so lange in den schweren Zeiten, noch mir zu helfen.  Schreibe mir viel, wie es dir geht.
